A Trip to Las Vegas

Aaron, Nicole, Jason, and I made a trip to sin city soon as the quarter got out and we had a Blast!

To THE COHORT

To THE COHORT, this has honestly been one of the greatest expeiences i have endured in my life and i thank everyone in the COHORT for bringing what thet bring to the group! from head to toe we and had a unique and diverse group which was filled with just great people! it's been a great 2 years and it has gone by so fast!

Movement 3!

This class was unlike any class I have ever had or even heard of. Everyday we were challenged in a new and different way. I give thanks to those who made it possible. I feel I am now better off because accomplishing this class help me take on challenges and deal adversity in a different way then I have ever been faced with before and I have now grown as a teacher and as a student because of it. on the quarter i received a 3.7 GPA which is not that great of an accomplishment for most but for me it is the best GPA I have ever received including high school, finding this out gave me great relief since the grades were above par for me and that it meant that the quarter was over! it shows that hard work and dedication can go as far as you want it too!

I start summer quarter in the next week! I have a 18 credit class load but I have to do what I have to do to make sure my student teaching works out this Fall with Brian Hagbo at Ellensburg High School.

I plan on continuing this blog since I find it relaxing and helpful to post what I am up to. it allows me too look back and see what I have done!....till next time!

Late Start!

So after closing the last 3 nights at Pizza Hut where I am a manger at, I was pretty tired and on top of that soon as I left work last night the allergies started getting to me so when I got home right before 1 am I took a couple Benadryl to help with the symptoms .....Bad Idea! I passed out and next thing I knew I woke up and was already 20 minutes late for class!!! I hustled to class and got a late start but I was able to test out in juggling, Frisbee, and diabolo which was a great feeling! Now all I have left are all the ones with wheels! Unicycling, Bike Riding, and Rollerblading it's weird how I have never been a fan of these but by the end of the quarter I will have these done!.....also the photos from our climbing trip is on this link so check it out!

Friday at the water!

Friday we got a treat to be able to get out to the water and hangout and try out some wakeboarding! After the day before I was there stictly there to hangout in the sun! I want to Thank Leanne to setup it for us it was a great way to spend the day!!!

Rock Climbing Adventure!

Today! We did something I thought I would never be part of in my life, due to me never really having an attraction to outdoor real rock climbing especially with my size because I am not the smallest guy around! Lol! We got up there and my buddy Vinny and I teamed up together and we took on the day together. We had similar feelings about the situation and the challenge and worked our way though our climbs. I think what made it so challenging is that it is so hard to simulate rock climbing at Ellensburg High School with their rock wall where you have many many grips up the wall where as in Peshastin there was very few grips like what EHS offered. Also I had no idea how to repel until I got to the top and Fred Stanley taught me on the rock and just lowering overall was completely different then at EHS. We worked though our climbs together and were completely supportive of each other the whole day and I am pretty sure me and Vinnie don’t complete our climbs if we weren’t there for each other. Overall we challenged our selves with everything we did that day and got to feel proud for what we did and got dinner afterwards with the volunteer climbers and professors at Gustaves.

Life's obstacles wouldn't be called hurdles if there wasn't away around them!

Hiked the ridge today!

The class went to the ridge and for me it was a first. The walk got stepper and stepper and higher and higher as we went which meant the more tired i got! it got to a point where you kept thinking the top has to be right around the corner and just would never come and it being my 1st time never knew how long it took but now I do. It was a lot of fun and it was a great way to take in the view!

Rock Wall climbing at EHS

Today was a prep climbing day for the rock climbing we will be doing in Leavenworth next Thursday. A man from up there by the name of Fred Stanley came down to help us out and prep us for our trip next week. We practiced climbing, tying knots and belaying today all which is crucial when climbing. I had fun and it was a new experience for me and it made get excited for next weeks climb!

Friday Skit Night

I got to flim one of the skits my buddies Aaron, Jason, and Vinny did at honors camp over the weekend. This one is called Helping Hands which the idea came from "Whose Line is it Anyways" Aaron is showing Vinny who is a forign exchange student how to get ready in the moring with the help from Jason's arms. Enjoy!

Mentos Explosion at Camp

At one of the stops along the map for the quest for the chest we had the students do a Mentos Explosion and I was able to film one of them. Enjoy!

Honors Camp - Recap

So the camp was a success I feel that Mike Mary and I did a great job with the kids and that they enjoyed our session. The Quest for the Chest worked out great. We did have to make adjustments since we had never been there and didn’t know exactly where we were going have our stops along our treasure map. With our session we got to learn about the student’s and connect with them for the limited time we had with them. But for the most part we accomplished what we planned for and it worked out.
We got to participate in the camps skits and the one I put on was the amazing disappearing act! In which we made mike disappear! The trick to the disappearing act was to create a distraction. I had limwell and Jason get into a “fight” lol behind the audience to draw all of their attention by them fighting and having the girls scream and pull them off of each other. Mean while mike ran off stage from behind our sheet. Once we gained the audiences attention again we dropped the sheet to show that mike was gone! It fooled many students and worked out very well!
The Cabins were alright I guess. When I 1st walked into my cabin I had to kill like 8 huge ants and from there I knew I wasn’t in my house back in Ellensburg! Tho I ended up being grouped with the same group of guys I roomed with in our hotels in Tampa so it was no problem. The meals were okay pretty much what I expected. The 80’s dance was a fun way to be able to dress up, dance and listen to some 80’s music with the 8th graders and have a great time!

Overall it was a great weekend spent with friends while also being able to work with students in a different atmosphere then a classroom while going though the whole camp experience with skits, campfire, cabins, trip to the Lake Wenatchee beach, and the dance to create a great weekend and experience.

Honors Camp is This Weekend!

Honors camp is this weekend and we got to see the lists of students signed up for our activities and we sessions that will have 4 students all the way up to 17 students in one session. Mary, Mike, and I ran around town getting supplies for the camp witch included a Shasta cola and mentos explosion trial run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3oV4rqjcew&feature=PlayList&p=A1BE129854F9AA88&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2) in a parking lot which with only 4 mentos got the explosion above our head. We went from the Dollar Tree, then to the Party Barn, then to Fred Meyer and then finally to Jerrols. We got back to my place and worked on making our treasure chest and our treasure maps. Check out the photos of our project!

GEOCACHING

Today we we got to learn about the world of Geocaching! (http://www.geocaching.com/ ) If you don't know what it is well?...to make a long story short it is a GIANT scavenger hunt which spans the globe where there is nearly 800,000 Cache's out there which are are all placed by coordinates and the information about the cache is posted online including the GPS coordinates. We got to take our own item bag in groups of 3 and travel across the campus and place it where we want marking the coordinates then we meet up with the group again to share our info, talk to the recreation students, and have some lunch. After that we dispersed around campus again to look for our classmates caches which we had much success. overall we learned a lot about the world of geocaching and got to get out in the sun ( and that Strong Eburg Wind!) and try it out a little.

After School Clubhouse!

The Ellensburg School District has had a unique scheduling setup this year in which they have had several half days on Fridays through this school year. The PE Club has put on an After School Clubhouse at Lincoln elementary school this year. This service is put on for multiple reasons - One for elementary students don't have to go home on half days, parents can pick their children at a more convenient time, students can have more physical activity time added to their day, raise money for the physical eduction club and so us students can spend more time interacting with students in a Physical Education setting. I have got to spend a lot of time with various types of students while doing various activities. I have also got to spend time with Professors at the Clubhouse in more of a one on one situation while discussing teaching methods. here are some photos from the last clubhouse!

From point A to Point B

The title for me kinda sounds like the this quarter. I am just trying to whatever I can to get from the beginning to end! but this post pertains to the orienteering course we took this past Thursday. We meet up in the field house and learned all the parts to a compass and how to use it by having to get to targets and traveling in a perfect triangle. The best part was having to use the map to get to different areas of campus while having to get there and answering questions. So it turned into a campus wide scavenger hunt where my teammates Drew and Mike were able to accomplish with quickness and success. As a group we used a lot of teamwork and problem solving skills to get though the list of places and questions! after accomplishing the scavenger hunt I started thinking about how I would love to start off school years with an activity like this especially with students that are new to the school like freshmen in high school. Also since this is out only day spent on orienteering this quarter so by completing the days activities we earned an advanced grade to give me two on the quarter thus far.

Testing Update!

Tested out at Advanced! at in flower sticks which was my 1st test so far. I plan on testing out at intermediate with unicycling and juggling at our next testing session. still have some work to do with the diabolo which I am capable of doing 6 tricks and sometimes 7! lol! but getting it all together as a routine will be the hardest part of the skill assessment but hopefully I will be able to put them down consecutively by testing time. That's all the testing for circus arts so i am feeling capable to test out at the intermediate level for all of them. all for now!

Frisbe!

Frisbee is a sport i enjoy to play and that seems to be way I feel with many invasion games such as football and basketball. To me Frisbee screams summertime fun with the friends in the park or at a BBQ. well we got to the fieldhouse and since it was a little cold due to that amazing Ellensburg wind we stayed inside for the most part. we practiced our Frisbee skills with multiple activities. Were did some Frisbee bowling where we had to knock down some pins, hang time where you had to see how far you can throw a Frisbee and run it down and catch it, and we also did a activity where you run parallel to a partner and throw back and forth to each other without stopping or dropping the Frisbee which made us practice leading throws to our partner. we then played 3 0n 3 Ultimate Frisbee which was really fun to compete with the class mates and the intensity, fun, and skills go way up when playing against each other. We then went outside to play Frisbee golf where Sean, Jason, Carl and I got to fight the lovely wind but we had a lot of fun picking out targets as holes and at every hole we had to work on a different throw so we could work on our backhand, forehand, and vertical throws. Frisbee golf was eventful from when we had to fight the wind our rolling throw in which it seemed our throws would go about 20 feet and the take a right turn with the wind! lol We then had to work though the sprinklers that were going off, the Frisbee landing on a video filming tower and a lovely forehand pass that slipped out of my hand that hit Sean in the shoulder and sent him to the ground.! it was a great time but we ended back inside working on the advanced and intermediate level skills to finish out class.

PEAK

Over the weekend The Physical Education program Hosted the 9th annual Physical Education Activity Kaleidoscope (PEAK)! it was held at the Ellensburg High School. I went to the one last year as a student and attended this one as more of a volunteer to help the Physical education program. The best part about PEAK is that you get to see many teachers and students from all over the state to talk to and interact with about Physical Education and the sessions of the day. the most entertaining sessions of the day are the dancing, Geo fitness, and circus arts. with our movement 3 class we got meet with a current student teacher though Eastern Washington University named holly who showed us what Indo Boards are the day before she presented at the conference in the field house. At first I thought this is all balance which is not my strongest suit but me and mike hopped on and worked with them for and hour asking holly questions as she answered them and showed us a progression and many, many things you can do with a Indo Board. By the end mike and I were having fun with the boards while getting a workout.

Everyday!

I have really never put in so much work for a class! With this class I have had to put in a good amount of time every day. Besides the class which is 4 hours every Tuesday and Thursday, I have had to practice outside of class. For instance in the last day I have taken home a Diablo to work on tricks, I went played Frisbee and worked on throws yesterday for an hour with my roommates, and besides that I have to plan out activities for the honors camp but when all of the people in my group are really busy and have literally no time to get together due to work, class, and sport obligations to attend to which makes it hard to get together even though i am very excited about the camp. Our group meet today for 30 minutes to go over the overall plan of our activities which will consist of a team scavenger hunt with a pirate theme where the group will go from spot to spot taking on challenges such as the human knot and trust falling activity to work though the treasure map to get to the end. Then of course I have to stay up on my blog for the class which I don’t mind at cause I really enjoy it. It just seems like if this movement class is not on my to do list for everyday that I am falling behind so it has become priority number 1 for the quarter. I already realize with the activities we have to do in this class that I am already behind because I have had no prior experience with anything in the class and I know that rock wall climbing, Diablo, flower sticks, juggling, unicycling, bicycling, in line skating, orienteering, rappelling and archery will be hard to pick up on in a quarter. I will have to spend many hours working on these skills to get success but that i am willing to do to get the success. If I spend time everyday on this then maybe just maybe by the end I will show success in all of the areas.

Archery!

Today we got to go out to Dr. Mathias place on the Southside of Ellensburg and shoot some arrows. Was the 1st time I got to pull back an arrow and let it rip but I must say I felt a little like Robin Hood! We got to take turns with the Bows and take 3 consecutive shots at the targets from about 25 - 30 feet away. Sounded easy enough but it was difficult enough just to stay consistent with your accuracy but the biggest factor was that lovely Ellensburg wind which would come over the hillside in nice burst and stayed pretty consistent throughout the class. Mike, Sean and I took turns sharing a target in which we showed progress after the 1st few trial runs and were hitting the targets constantly by the end. I didn’t get a bull’s eye during the class but my accuracy did get better from hitting the target with 2 out of the 1st 3 arrows to being able to hit red circle that surrounded the yellow bull’s eye. The experience overall was fun, I got to spend some time out in the sun with the cohort taking on archery which I felt like was a big game of darts, or at least that’s how I saw it!...I also gained a lovely sunburn on my forearm in the shape of the forearm guard which looks pretty funny!

Rock Wall Climbing

This was most defiantly a first for me! The prior experience I had with this would be climbing on trees way back when in my days in elementary school, but the biggest difference back then was that I was much smaller and had whole branches to grab on to instead little colored knobs that my size 13 shoes are suppose to climb on! On another note, it is a workout! I don’t think my forearms have ever been so worked in my life! This comes from a little improper form I was using, at first I climbed with my body close to the wall and really worked my arms but I soon learned from Dr. Mathias to loosen my arms and hang more away from the wall which was less stressful on the arms and allowed for more abilities to move.

5 pointers I learned about Rock wall Climbing was:

1. Climb with loose arms to keep your muscles less tense and your body away from the wall

2. When needed you can use a technique called matching to help get to the next knob, this is where you put both hands on one knob so your lead hand can get to the next knob.

3. Be a cat not a cow! A cow climber (like me at least at 1st! lol) you can hear hit the wall with their feet and hands, where as a cat climber is quiet and makes each move smoothly.

4. When needing another spot to put your feet you can use a technique called smear. This is similar to matching because you only use this when you need to move your body to get to the next knob except this is with your feet. What you do is when moving to your right you can put your right foot above the knob it is on to the wall generate friction to use the wall as a temporary knob so you can move your left foot over to the knob your right foot was on to move your body enough to get your right foot to the next knob

5. The last item I learned was to never line up your feet and hands straight up and down because you become more like a barnyard door and swing back and forth where instead you want to constantly have a wide base to keep balance on the wall.

Circus Arts!

Circus Arts, to sum it up ...it's harder then it looks! Being in the Physical Education major and a high school athlete I am used to having success in traditional sports such as basketball, football, baseball, and volleyball, but circus arts is a totally different ball game! Everything in this class I can honestly say I am a 1st timer except for messing around with the Diabolo's (pictured to the right) at last years peak conference held at Ellensburg High School. The summary of this class for me so far has been frustrating! What has come easiest was the flower sticks which are not that difficult in comparison to the other arts. The diabolo is probably the most fun because it is still very much challenging but it is more entertaining and flashy! I can currently only do 3 tricks which are the whip, throw and catch, and the trampoline. I did the the trampoline for the 1st time today and I have to say when you are able to get a trick down it is a great feeling! Circus arts calls for a lot of creativity which I think I got the imagination for just not exactly the skills to back it yet! The other arts will need much more practicing such as unicycling and juggling.....much more practicing!!!
